http://standards.ieee.org/getieee802/802.3.html Ethernet is a LAN technology first developed by Xerox®, and refined by DEC and Intel (DIX). The access mechanism is Collision Sense Multiple Access with Collision Detection (CSMA/CD). Ethernet was standardized by the IEEE in the IEEE 802.3 standard. Today the term Ethernet includes 10, 100 (Fast), and 1000 (Gigabit) Mbps Ethernet technologies. Development of 10 Gbps Ethernet is in progress in the IEEE 802.3ae 10Gb/s Ethernet Task Force. Ethernet is the most common LAN technology with 88% of the installed base and 98% of all new purchases being Ethernet. |
